Dr. Prafulla Kumar Mishra is a highly accomplished and respected Senior Pediatric Surgeon with over four decades of medical experience and more than three decades of exclusive dedication to Pediatric Surgery. Born on 10th August 1954, Dr. Mishra completed his MBBS from S.C.B. Medical College, Cuttack under Utkal University in 1978. He further pursued advanced surgical training and obtained DNB in General Surgery from the National Board of Examinations, New Delhi, followed by M.Ch. in Pediatric Surgery from Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College, Calcutta University in 1999. He subsequently earned DNB in Pediatric Surgery in 2000 and was awarded MNAMS (Member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences), Government of India, in 2004. In recognition of his academic and clinical excellence, he was conferred FIACA (USA) in 2015 after his association with the Indo-American Cancer Association at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York
Dr. Mishra has served in the Medical Education Service since 1995 and superannuated on 31st August 2019 as Professor in the Department of Pediatric Surgery at N.R.S. Medical College & Hospital, Kolkata, under West Bengal University of Health Sciences.
During his tenure, he played a vital role in teaching undergraduate, postgraduate, and post-doctoral students. He trained multiple M.Ch. Pediatric Surgery candidates under his direct supervision and was appointed as Examiner and Question Paper Setter for M.Ch. exit examinations. His teaching career reflects deep commitment to academic excellence and surgical mentorship.
With approximately 31 years of focused experience in Pediatric Surgery and over 40 years in overall medical practice, Dr. Mishra has served in several prestigious institutions including N.R.S. Medical College, IPGME&R Kolkata, Calcutta National Medical College, Bankura Sammilani Medical College, and SSKM Hospital.
He also completed international observerships at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (USA) and Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital (UK), enhancing his expertise in pediatric oncology and advanced pediatric surgical care.
His areas of expertise include neonatal surgery, congenital anomalies, pediatric gastrointestinal surgery, pediatric urology, pediatric oncology surgery, laparoscopic procedures in children, and management of complex surgical disorders in infants and children. He has vast experience in handling rare and challenging pediatric tumors, adrenal cortical neoplasms, hepatoblastomas, gastric teratomas, and other complex conditions.
Dr. Mishra has contributed extensively to medical literature with numerous publications in reputed national and international journals. His research work spans pediatric oncology, adrenal tumors, hepatoblastoma, cytopathology, and congenital malformations. Several of his papers have been published in Pediatric Surgery International, Journal of Pediatric Surgery (Elsevier), Diagnostic Cytopathology, Indian Paediatrics, and other indexed journals.
He has received Best Paper and Best Poster awards at national conferences and has actively participated in international congresses and workshops.
In addition to his academic achievements, Dr. Mishra has held key administrative and leadership roles. He served as Acting Head of Department on multiple occasions and was Organizing Secretary of the Indian Association of Pediatric Surgeons (West Bengal Chapter). Earlier in his career, he worked as Block Medical Officer of Health in rural West Bengal, demonstrating his dedication to public health service.
